Blue Slide Park debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 after selling 144,000 copies in its first week. It was the first independently distributed debut album to top the Billboard charts since Tha Dogg Pound’s Dogg Food in 1995.

Despite huge commercial success, the album was panned by mainstream critics—most notoriously receiving a brutal 1.0/10 rating from Pitchfork. Mac later admitted that the harsh backlash deeply affected him, but it also became the direct catalyst for him changing direction, moving to LA, and creating more experimental, introspective projects.

Unlike Best Day Ever or his later studio albums, Mac decided to keep Blue Slide Park completely featureless—every verse across the entire 16-track tracklist is solo.
